.Taking turns.

River time has always been a relaxing escape, but with this wild toddler, the only way to get rest is to take supervision turns.  Her impulsive curiosity wants to test all the physical boundaries possible with no thought of the consequences!  In her resilience she can quickly shake these things off, but the frequency of bumps, bruises, and other injuries still breaks my heart.

And yes, my 38 week self joined Dylan in that inflatable pool to combat the heat, and I plan to spend much of the summer doing the same.  It is refreshing and serene, and isn't that the point of looking forward to this season all year?  Especially in south Alabama where the heat is stifling, although that does not seem to slow down the kids who surround our little spot on the water.  They are full of energy and crazy stories, and go long into the night playing hide-and-seek in the dark and jabbering over each other by the fire, and asking 100 questions, and becoming sticky eating key-lime flavored marshmallows (?!), until G and I look to each other and decide that our sleeping toddler isn't all that exhausting and head on to bed to start catching up on the sleep that will for sure be missed in the coming weeks with her arrival.

P.S. More stories from the river.

.Labor Day Weekend.

A weekend made up of an old friend's wedding, staying at the cabin enjoying the simple and quiet, boat rides, and milk mustaches, listening to this soundtrack on repeat, and time on the dock, and fishing, lazy reading, cookouts with friends, sweaty curls, and little boy neighbors with wacky thoughts, humidity-soaked skin, making brownies, and loud, heavy storms.

I didn't miss the 'labor' part at all.

.Summer Skin.

Squeaky swings and tall grass
The longest shadows ever cast
The water's warm and children swim
And we frolicked about in our summer skin
I don't recall a single care
Just greenery and humid air

.Our Happy Place.

This weekend we were in our happy place, where we celebrated a friend's birthday, and where I let my hair air dry and it felt really good, and we lathered up with sunscreen, and slept in the sun, and swam with the pups in the lake, and splashed in baby pools, and drank sun tea with every meal, and found vinyls of my favorite musicals at the thrift store, and talked excitedly through and in between meals, and baby needed post-sun naps, and it was the refreshing kind of heat, that one that doesn't feel like you're going to melt, and the days felt nice and long.

Never quite long enough though, you know?

P.S. My other happy place.

.From the Clouds.

In my opinion, a summer soundtrack is not complete without a little Jack Johnson.

Oh you’re such a pretty thing I’ll take you and I’ll make you all mine
I would steal you from this patient world let it chase us
It could never take you back
We could watch it from the clouds
We can’t stop it anyhow
It’s not ours
We could watch it from the clouds
We can’t stop it anyhow
It’s not ours
I know you know me well enough

To know I’m lucky to have you
But oh it’s just the little things
The words that I should tell you all the time
Like you’re so sweet to me
When you beat me in double solitaire
You’re so sweet to me
In a world that’s not always fair
We could watch it from the clouds
We can’t stop it anyhow
It’s not ours
We could watch it from the clouds
We can’t stop it anyhow
It’s not ours
The more love that you feel
The more your little heart will ache
Love is the only thing that carries on
It’s the only thing this world can’t take
This love is ours
This love is
Oh, you’re such a pretty thing
I’ll take you and I’ll make you all mine

.Memorial Weekend Moments.

Sun + good company = an outstanding long weekend.
Oh... and yes my bump looks lopsided.
It is not an optical illusion.
Baby seems to be strongly favoring my right side.
I try to shift her back so I don't look like I'm growing an alien.
She always finds her way back.
Grief, she is already stubborn.

.Mother's Day Weekend.

Did you know that mayonnaise can be a substitute for eggs in a recipe?  It was news to me, but when we were not fully prepared for Mary's cupcake cooking desperate times called for desperate measures {thanks google}.  This weekend was exactly what I needed full of grilling, very adult discussions about parenting, catching up on my DVR, cabin time napping in the sun, and a DIY project for the nursery enjoyed outdoors.  The relaxing routine that develops during warm months is comforting and little is better than simple puppy smiles.

.What A Winning Week.

This week has brought several smiles to my face.

We got to start it off right this weekend with a dinner and coffee date night and trips to the river.  River season always consists of sun-kissed skin, fishing, food from the grill and getting to actually read for fun.  I became completely entranced by this book series and devoted all my spare time (and even some of my precious time) to finishing it. With school there is little time I can read for fun so I don't take the escape for granted.  Speaking of education, I also found out this week that my and Virginia's manuscript on technology's influence on grief counseling has been accepted for presentation at a conference!  This is a great start to building our professional reputations.  I experienced a thoughtful gesture thanks to my coworker Sara who not only got me the cup I've been searching for, but even had it personalized; I've been determined to keep hydrated to avoid the dreaded pregnancy puffiness and cankles!  I won my first giveaway and will soon have a new beautiful piece of art for our home {thanks Nicole and Sarah!}. We've nearly finished putting the nursery together (reveal post coming soon).  We're having a baby shower on Sunday thrown by dear friends.  Schoolwork is slowly coming to an end and freedom is close enough to taste.

Here's to additional smiles, appreciating blessings, and spreading this week's happinesses and delights.

.Summer's End.

Let's be real, the end of a southern summer is hardly in August.  Fall weather isn't usually expected until around October which can be marked by the middle of college football season.  It's still in the 90's here and humid, I still glisten everywhere I go, my air conditioning is still set on high and yet I consider my summer over due to the lack of leisure I now have with school along with work.  So as I kiss my sundrenched summer goodbye, I wanted to reflect on some of my favorite memories.

1. Sunny weekends on the river

2. Commencements: graduating from my Master's program & Alex graduating from highschool

3. Great conversations and grilling on the new deck [that G built himself this summer!] with friends

4. Spending some time with the cutest most adorable munchkin, my little sister Katheryn Lorraine who is growing wayyy too fast for my liking and my incredibly artistic and talented brother Alex

'

5. Celebrating my 24th birthday Stepford Wife style and transforming my living room for the dinner party

7. My college girl's trip to Seattle

8. Learning new recipes and having G be my guinea pig as seen here, here, and here

9. Finding my artistic side and realizing I like it regardless if I am good at it or not as seen here, here and here

10. and finally... being brave enough to start this blog that I have been thinking about for months... and enjoying every minute of it.

Hope everyone enjoys whatever may be the lasts of your summer but not the end of  memories you appreciate!
